Texas Longhorns Tight End Transfer to Join Texas A&M Aggies
The Texas Longhorns have suffered another key loss, as tight end Amari Niblack has decided to leave the program via the NCAA Transfer Portal. Niblack, who joined the Longhorns from Alabama, is now set to continue his college career with the Texas A&M Aggies.
According to Pete Nakos of On3, Niblack is expected to sign with the Aggies after a recent visit to College Station. His decision follows just one season in Austin, where he struggled to establish a significant role in the offense. Originally transferring to Texas with high expectations, Niblack concluded his season with only five receptions for 33 yards while playing behind Gunnar Helm and Juan Davis on the depth chart.
While Niblack’s overall contribution to the Longhorns’ season was minimal, he displayed flashes of potential, particularly during his time with the Alabama Crimson Tide. In his stint at Alabama, Niblack tallied five touchdowns, including one against Texas in 2023, a performance that made his transfer to Austin intriguing. Unfortunately, his role diminished as the season progressed. His most productive game with Texas came against Vanderbilt, where he recorded two receptions for 22 yards, though his impact was limited in other appearances, including a single two-yard reception in the Longhorns’ 17-7 victory over Texas A&M on November 30.
In August, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian praised Niblack for his progress during preseason camp. “Amari the last two or three days has probably had his best days since he’s been with us,” Sarkisian remarked. “He’s really healthy and you can see the impact he can have in the passing game as well as in the run game.” However, that potential failed to translate consistently into game-day success.
Niblack’s departure marks a notable addition for Texas A&M’s offense, as the Aggies aim to bolster their tight end depth and overall passing attack. His athleticism and prior track record with Alabama suggest that a fresh start in College Station could reignite his career.
The loss of Niblack is part of a larger exodus for Texas this offseason. Nine other players have entered the portal, including standout receiver Johntay Cook II and defensive linemen Sydir Mitchell (LSU), Aaron Bryant (Vanderbilt), and Jaray Bledsoe (Mississippi State). Others, like linebackers Tausili Akana (BYU) and Derion Gullette (Mississippi State), as well as cornerback Jay’Vion Cole (Arizona) and edge rusher Justice Finkley (Kansas), have also chosen to leave the program.
As Niblack prepares to don the maroon and white, his story underscores the shifting dynamics of college football, where players increasingly seek opportunities to make an immediate impact elsewhere. Texas A&M will undoubtedly look to maximize the talent and experience Niblack brings to their roster.
