Jeremiah Smith Shines as Ohio State Advances to National Championship
Ohio State freshman standout and former top-ranked recruit Jeremiah Smith is set to make his mark in the national championship game after an impressive season. The wide receiver, who contributed significantly to the Buckeyes’ playoff run with 290 receiving yards over two postseason victories, faced a tough challenge in the semifinal matchup against Texas. The Longhorns prioritized stopping the young star, limiting him to just one catch for three yards. Despite the tight coverage, Ohio State secured a 28-14 victory, advancing to face Notre Dame in the title game.
The 6-foot-3 freshman has been a cornerstone of Ohio State’s success this season. Many young players might struggle to maintain composure when neutralized during a high-stakes game, but Smith’s team-oriented mindset shone through. “It’s frustrating, but it’s part of being a teammate,” Smith acknowledged. “You’ve got to open things up for others.”
Smith’s impact extends far beyond the stat sheet. His presence on the field forces defenses to adapt, creating opportunities for his teammates. With 1,227 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns, he shattered Cris Carter’s freshman school records for receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. Notre Dame is now preparing to counter Smith’s exceptional talent. Fighting Irish cornerback Leonard Moore spoke highly of Smith, emphasizing the importance of staying disciplined. “He’s definitely an elite receiver. He’s big, physical, and knows how to attack the ball in the air,” Moore stated. “We have to be just as aggressive and ready to challenge him.”
Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly highlighted the team’s depth as a crucial element of their success. “The beauty of what we have here is that we’re not reliant on one weapon,” Kelly explained. “The quarterback needs to read the defense, adapt, and find the right option. Will [Howard] did an excellent job of doing that against Texas.”
Beyond his contributions on the field, Smith is taking steps to secure his future. Reports indicate that the Miami Gardens native has purchased permanent total disability insurance, a move that protects him against career-ending injuries. The policy, costing between $7,500 and $8,000 per million dollars of coverage, extends through August 2027 or until Smith signs an NFL contract.
Playing in a national championship game has long been a dream for Smith, who grew up envisioning such moments. However, even he didn’t expect to reach this stage so soon in his career. “I never thought my first year of college would bring this opportunity,” he reflected. “It’s a blessing, and I won’t take it for granted.”
