Injuries Impact Teams as National Championship Approaches
The upcoming College Football Playoff (CFP) championship game between Notre Dame and Ohio State has been overshadowed by injuries affecting key players on both teams. Notre Dame’s offensive lineman Anthonie Knapp will miss the crucial matchup after sustaining a high ankle sprain during their semifinal victory over Penn State in the Orange Bowl. However, head coach Marcus Freeman offered some good news, confirming that Rocco Spindler remains on track to play in the championship game.
For Ohio State, star cornerback Denzel Burke, who has been managing an upper-body injury, has been cleared to play. Head coach Ryan Day expressed confidence in Burke’s readiness for the game scheduled to take place on January 20 in Atlanta.
Notre Dame enters the title clash riding a 13-game winning streak, battling through adversity all season, including a flu outbreak last week. The team now aims to secure its first national championship since 1988. Meanwhile, Ohio State is vying for its first title since 2014.
Preparation Amid a Grueling Schedule

The Irish lost several key players early, beginning with offensive lineman Charles Jagusah in preseason due to a pectoral injury. Later, both offensive and defensive lineman Jordan Botelho suffered season-ending injuries in September against Purdue. Adding to the challenges, star cornerback Benjamin Morrison sustained a hip injury in October, while defensive lineman Rylie Mills was ruled out following a knee injury during the first-round playoff win over Indiana.
Adjustments for the Final Showdown
As Notre Dame prepares to face Ohio State, the absence of Knapp has raised questions about adjustments to the offensive line. Freeman revealed that Charles Jagusah, who made a surprising return from his preseason injury, played his first snaps in the Orange Bowl and could be a pivotal contributor in the title game. “He stepped in and performed exceptionally,” Freeman said. “Credit to him and the coaching staff for ensuring he was prepared when his moment came.”
Jeremiyah Love, Notre Dame’s 1,000-yard rusher who scored a critical touchdown against Penn State despite a sore knee, is expected to be fully fit. Wide receiver Beaux Collins, recovering from a calf strain, is also working toward game readiness.
On the Ohio State side, Burke, a four-year starter, was limited during the Buckeyes’ Cotton Bowl win against Texas, playing only 28 snaps. Jermaine Mathews Jr. filled in during the second half and received praise from Coach Day. “Jermaine has proven himself,” Day said. “He’s a gritty player who embraces competition and has earned the trust of his teammates.”
