Novak Djokovic is not planning to retire while he can still compete against the best players on the biggest stages. But the Serbian admitted to GQ that he is thinking about how he wants to end his career. Ahead of the Australian Open, Djokovic backed one of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to break his Grand Slam record and called his rivalries with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal “eternal.”
Novak Djokovic has given careful thought as to how he wants to retire, but has no plans to bring down the curtain on a legendary career just yet.
The Serbian will face wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open on Sunday, January 12, with Andy Murray a fresh face in his corner.
No active player comes anywhere close to the 37-year-old’s tally of 24 Grand Slams – Carlos Alcaraz sits 20 shy – and Djokovic would be forgiven for thinking he had done it all.
“Yes, I mean if you solely look at it from the perspective of completing achievements and the game itself? Then, yeah, I mean I guess…,” Djokovic told GQ in response to the suggestion he had beaten the sport.
Djokovic has seen his long-time rivals melt into retirement one-by-one: Federer in 2022, Murray last summer, and Rafael Nadal just two months ago.
