Cowboys Sign Will Grier to Active Roster Ahead of Regular Season Finale
The Dallas Cowboys are giving quarterback Will Grier another chance to showcase his skills as they prepare for their 2024 regular season finale against the Washington Commanders on Sunday at 1:00 PM. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Grier was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster on Saturday, marking a potential return to the field for the veteran quarterback.
This move comes two months after the Cowboys initially signed Grier to their practice squad, shortly after his release by the Philadelphia Eagles. Grier’s journey to Dallas has been a tumultuous one, featuring stints with the New England Patriots, Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina Panthers, and most recently, the Eagles, who signed him in March.
Grier’s 2023 season was particularly eventful. After spending the preseason with the Cowboys, he was informed that the team would be moving on from him just one day before he started their final preseason game. Despite the bittersweet circumstances, Grier delivered a career-best performance, completing 29 of 35 passes for 305 yards, throwing two touchdowns, and rushing for 53 yards with two additional scores on the ground. It was a memorable farewell that showcased his potential under pressure.
Following his release by Dallas, Grier had a brief stint with the Eagles, where he made two preseason appearances, completing 7 of 11 passes for 51 yards. However, he was cut from Philadelphia’s practice squad shortly after.
Grier’s NFL career has had its challenges. Since being drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 2019, he has appeared in only two regular-season games, where he threw for 228 yards and four interceptions. Despite the limited opportunities, Grier has remained determined to find his footing in the league.
Before entering the NFL, Grier had a standout collegiate career. After transferring from Florida, he spent two seasons as the starting quarterback for West Virginia University (WVU) from 2017 to 2018. During his time with the Mountaineers, Grier amassed an impressive 7,354 passing yards and 71 touchdowns, solidifying himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the program’s history.
Now, as Grier rejoins the Cowboys’ active roster, he has an opportunity to potentially contribute during the season finale.
